Pallipalayam (பள்ளிபாளையம்) is a Twin City for the mainlands of Erode.

It is a Municipality sub-urban area, located across Erode City. It is located in Namakkal district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It falls under Tiruchengode sub-district. It comes under Komarapalayam Legislative Constituency and Erode Parliamentary Constituency.

It is Located on the Eastern Banks of the River Cauvery, while Erode is on the Western Banks of the River. It is located at 6 km from Erode Junction and 3 km from Erode Bus Station. Most of the people in Pallipalayam will visit the city of Erode for all kinds of shopping.

In Tamil, the term 'Palli' refers to 'dwelling' and 'extensive knowledge' ambiguously and 'palayam' is a general term for locations where civilization grows, especially in the Fertile/Agricultural areas.

Pallipalayam Town Panchayat was constituted in the year 1963, subsequently it was upgraded to Third Grade Municipality effective from 7.10.2004.[1]. It has a population of 35,635 (2001 census) and an extent area of 4.70 km2. The town is divided into 21 wards.

The River Cauvery's beds are rocky and unique in its plains which supports the growth of popular freshwater fish breeds like eels, in this area.

Demographics

As of 2001[update] India census[2], Pallipalayam is a municipal town, which is a part of Erode City, & is located on the western banks of river Cauvery or Kaveri.

Pallipalayam municipality had a population of 57,485. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Pallipalayam has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 54%. In Pallipalayam, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Cuisine

The Chicken variety named after the town, Pallipalayam Chicken, is famous all over the country, even in middle-east and western countries.[citation needed]
Climate

Though the river banks are plains and fertile, the terrain here is rocky and uneven. Climate usually Dry and hot. Rainfall mostly Cyclonic from Oct-Jan and Summer Mar-June.
Specialities

Pallipalayam is the birth place of the mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.

The nearest bus terminus is Erode Central Bus Station, the nearest railway station is Erode Cauvery RS and the closest major station is Erode Junction. The nearest airport is Salem Airport and Coimbatore Airport.

SPB colony is located 7 kilometres (4 miles) east of the Erode Junction. It is the housing area over 155 acres (0.63 km2) for the employees of the Pulp and Paper mills of Seshasayee Paper & Boards Ltd.

The Ardhanareeshwara Temple at Tiruchengode is located about 9 km away from the SPB colony.

Kongu Tirupathi is located here in SPB Colony.

Monsoon & Flood

Pallipalayam gets rainfall during both South West and North East Monsoon Winds. During this season, River Cauvery regularly floods, creating problems for residents who resides near the banks of the river.

Powerloom

Pallipalayam has the highest number of power loom industries in the state and is a major exporter of textiles in India.[citation needed]
